But, back to school we are! We’ve started a few new units this week: volume in math, magnetism in science, and the Civil War in history. We’re finishing up our study of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), and will begin a new novel study next week. We will begin reading Esperenza Rising, which is about Mexican migrant workers in California, and couple that with a nonfiction book about the Montgomery bus boycotts in Alabama, while looking at them both through the lens of the UDHR. We began reading background information today to prepare for writing an opinion essay about which of three leaders was most influential in the anti-slavery movement. Lots of exciting things happening!
You may want to mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 30. We will be performing some of the Hope of America songs at a 9:30 assembly for the school. If you are unable to make it to the Hope of America performance on May 7, this is an opportunity to hear some of the songs. We plan on the assembly taking between 30-45 minutes. It is not too late to sign up for Hope of America if you haven’t done it yet, but time is running out. We will be picking up the shirts in the next few weeks, so they will shut down the website to sign up. Thanks!
Our last fifth grade store will be April 26. The money the students raise at this store will be used to purchase admittance to some difference grade level activities in May. We have not set these activities yet, but in the past we’ve had capture the flag, a movie, and a board game party.
Lastly, this week is our Go for the Chrome fundraiser. This money will go towards buying some new technology and replacing some of the Chromebooks that have worn out over the last few years. These Chromebook carts get a lot of use! Even if you cannot contribute to the fundraiser, please check the box on the yellow forms that your student brought home today and send it back to school, and that will count towards classroom participation.
Thanks so much for helping your children stay focused these last few weeks! It is sometimes hard after Spring Break for students to refocus on school work, but we still have a lot to learn in these last 8 weeks!
Have a wonderful week, and please let me know if you have any questions.
