Well, it looks like winter is coming! We got lots of snow at my house this weekend. Thank goodness for husbands and snow blowers! Please help your student make sure they are dressed for the weather, as we will have outside recess as much as possible!
We are finishing up our division unit this week, and will have a test on Friday. They are not required to use the standard “long division” algorithm in fifth grade, but the other strategies we have worked with really only work best with whole numbers, so the students do need to know the algorithm for division of decimals. We will also be taking a science test on Thursday over Earth’s Surfaces. We will be doing some review in class tomorrow, and they’ll have a review sheet and notes to bring home. We will be starting some fun work in history as we study the road to the American Revolution. We are reading two historical fiction novels right now, Chains and Sophia’s War, that both tell about events relating to the Revolution. Later this week, students will be given the identity of a colonist, and will use that identity to participate in debates as we reenact the Stamp Act Congress and the two Continental Congresses. Next Friday will be our presentations of the projects we are working on regarding earthquake disaster preparation. You are welcome to join us at 10:15 for the presentations in our classroom. So far, the students have written up a city write up about their chosen city, a timeline of earthquakes effecting their city, and a newspaper article advising citizens on how best to stay safe during an earthquake. They are currently working on a webpage, and when those are finished and graded, I will publish them for you to see. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful week! |
Mrs. Ann ZItoThis is my fourth year as a fifth grade teacher at Westfield, and I love it! I have taught accelerated magnet classes for all my thirteen years as a teacher, and feel that I have had the best job a teacher could ask for. I have three children of my own, and my husband is a teacher too! In my free time, I like to knit, sew, read, cook, and travel with my family. Archives
