I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend! I know that I am thankful for getting to spend my days with such a great group of fifth graders! They made it easy to come back after those relaxing days at home.
This week, we will be wrapping up our study of A Wrinkle in Time. Several students have commented that they saw the trailer for the movie coming out in March, and I am definitely intrigued by it! I hope that they do the book justice, as it is one of my favorite books of all time.
We are beginning new units in math (division), science (electricity), and history (Road to Revolution). Our science unit will help us get ready for our Underwater Robotics competition in March, and our history unit will give the students a chance to debate each other as they take on roles of colonists to learn about the events that lead to the American Revolutionary War.
We will be talking about the school STEM Fair (formerly Science Fair) in the next few weeks to get the students started thinking and working on their ideas. This year, the fair will introduce new scoring rubrics especially for Computer Science and Engineering projects. Our school STEM fair will be held Jan. 25, so mark you calendars now! I will be sending home all the forms they need, but I will also put links to them on the class website under Resources – Science if you need extra copies or need to reference rules or the scoring rubric.
Battle of the Books is also getting geared up. Teams will have their first meeting on Dec. 11. Keep encouraging them to be reading their BOB books!
Thank you so much, and thanks in advance for your help in keeping the students focused on school the next few weeks! Winter break will be here before we know it!
