Our first reading unit is connecting with our History unit on Explorers, and at the same time reinforcing some of the ideas we talked about with our Growth Mindset. We are reading a book about Ernest Shackelton’s failed trip across Antarctica, called “Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World.” We will spend a lot of time talking about what kinds of things we can learn from failure. The students have already gotten very excited about their reading.
In math, we are spending some time reviewing the concepts of prime and composite numbers, and adding to our knowledge by using these concepts to learn other things about numbers. We are beginning in science by studying genetics and heredity.
I mentioned to a few of you at our Back to School night that we will not be participating in Hope of America this year. They changed the dates from the beginning of April to early May, and we found last year that in addition to that being a busy time in school with wrapping up our curriculum, many families found it difficult to attend because of other activities that are in full swing at that time of year. We will still be performing our Veteran’s Day assembly in the afternoon of Nov. 11, so mark your calendars for that! We are excited about our trip to J.A. City (formerly known as BizTown) on Oct. 11, and are planning a trip to the State Capitol in February. We are tentatively scheduling a trip to Camp Floyd in the spring, and would like to take a trip to the Leonardo with Mrs. Tenney’s sixth grade class if we have the money for busses. There is a lot of things to look forward to the year, in addition to all the great learning we will be doing in class!
I have posted this week’s spelling words and assignment on the class website (zitoszainybrainies.weebly.com) under Assignments – Language Arts and will do so each week in case your child misplaces their papers.
Have a wonderful week!
